The Role

As a Software Engineering Manager on the Device Software team, you will lead the development and delivery of software for SPAN's hardware products. You will oversee software projects from conception to implementation, ensuring high quality and timely delivery. This role involves managing a team of engineers, providing technical guidance, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

SPAN’s Device Software team is responsible for the software that is physically embodied in our hardware products. Our products contain a complex network of microcontrollers and a single board computer that must work together with reliability. The Device Software team touches many parts of the system, from microcontrollers through embedded Linux, and interacts with other teams.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and manage a team of software engineers, fostering a collaborative and productive environment.

  • Oversee the software development lifecycle, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, helping to solve complex problems.

  • Work with product owners to define, estimate, and break down new features.

  • Collaborate with Electrical Engineers to troubleshoot hardware issues.

  • Implement best practices in software engineering, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.

  • Contribute to strategic planning and ensure alignment with business goals.

  • Participate in code reviews and ensure code quality.

About You

Required Qualifications

  • 3 years experience in software development in a leadership role.

  • 7 years experience writing software for a hardware device (in Linux, and/or on a microcontroller, etc).

  • 7 years experience writing in C and C++.

  • Exposure to real time operating systems (especially FreeRTOS).

  • Familiarity with a higher-level language like Python/C++/Java/Rust/etc.

  • Understanding engineering principles and processes to design robust systems.

  • Experience with modern software development processes like unit testing, continuous integration, and version control.

  • Ability to consider how work fits into the larger product and business.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with ARM FuSA RTOS.

  • Experience with functional safety and processes/standards like ISO-26262, IEC 61508, and UL1998

  • Exposure to Rust (the programming language).

  • Wireless technologies like WiFi, Bluetooth and Zigbee.

  • Experience with Linux userspace and kernel drivers.

  • Experience with electronics lab equipment.

  • Experience with designing and maintaining distributed systems.
