What we are looking for:

The Engineer, RT Controls is a key member of the Real-Time Controls team at Stem, and reports to the Manager RT Controls, Edge. This role is primarily responsible for the technical scope required to develop microgrid controls and power plant controls integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Photovoltaic Systems and Generator controls. The role focuses on the developing and future proofing Stem secondary level controls within the Stem ecosystem. This person will be required to keep with the evolving changes in technologies and practices in the renewable energy industry, such as hybrid systems (solar photovoltaic (PV) and BESS), advanced SCADA controls, demand management, load control, advanced inverter controls, and energy storage systems. This role will be one of the subject matter experts in a rapidly evolving team focused on microgrid controls, SCADA and power plant controls.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the team in developing real-time controls solutions for microgrids and power plant controls.

  • Program real-time controllers, ensuring the solution is productized and is consistent with the product roadmap.

  • Create, deploy, manage libraries and extensions which can be instantiated in an embedded ARM and Intel multi-core product. Proficiency in programming within the Codesys Platform or equivalent platform working in 61131-1 environment. Excellent skills programming in ST.

  • Provide SME assistance for project engineers , by reviewing designs , implements of standard control libraries.

  • Work with product manager in identifying new features based on commercial requests , develop implementation plans , add new features to existing control libraries, create new libraries.

  • Create a power system automation and control platform which can implement complex power system functions such as active load sharing, voltage management at all levels for solar + storage plant.

  • Develop , Maintain and Release new software with associated documentation.

  • Develop and manage quality of technical documentation, including specifications, design documents, and test plans.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering

  • 5+ years' experience with real-time software control systems

  • Real-time power system protection and automation control required for medium voltage AC and high voltage DC systems.

  • Demonstrated experience in implementing real-time control systems for microgrids and power plant controls.

  • Experience with power flow modeling and simulations, PSCAD, PSSE, Matlab, Simulink

  • Experience in compiling MATLAB Simulink to 61131-1 / C / C++ is a must.

  • Direct experience working within the renewable controls domain, deploying power system controls for LGIA / BPS power plants.

  • Experience with unit testing tools within Codesys and Simulink tools is a plus.

  • Should have demonstrated experience in creating standard applications in Codesys or equivalent platform.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail

  • Experience working in renewable energy is preferred.

  • Experience and solid understanding of microgrids, renewable energy integration and battery energy storage systems & microgrid controls, energy management systems, and electrical SCADA applications

  • Knowledge of applicable renewable and electrical codes and standards IEEE, 1547, NERC-CIP requirements, IEC61850, Sunspec, MESA standards, and LGIA requirements

  • Knowledge of various control schemes (frequency, voltage, VARS, Ride-through, etc.), protection schemes, and regulatory requirements pertaining to grid operations

  • Working knowledge of utility industry communications protocols (e.g., Modbus, DNP3, IEC61580)

  • Experience troubleshooting microgrid control systems that are not functioning properly.

  • Experience in developing control system solutions using Matlab and Simulink tools

  • Deploying controls software in embedded systems operating linux operating systems.

  • Experience in developing software using AGILE practices using JIIRA.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts clearly and effectively

Salary Range

$150,250.00 - $210,500.00
