ROLE OVERVIEW

We are seeking an experienced Director of Software Engineering to lead and scale our engineering organization through a critical phase of growth. This role combines deep technical leadership with executive-level strategic thinking, requiring someone who can drive architectural excellence while building high-performing teams and fostering a culture of innovation.

As the Director of the Utilities area, you will spearhead the development of some of our core software products, including our Daily Operations and Planning systems, that empower electrical companies to manage wildfire risk. This is a high-impact leadership role where you will manage multiple engineering teams while working as a peer alongside the Data and QA Directors, and their respective teams. Together, you will harmonize our technical ecosystem, ensuring that data-driven insights and rigorous quality standards are deeply integrated into every utility-focused solution we deliver. Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, you will be responsible for aligning engineering capabilities with business objectives, ensuring operational excellence, and developing the next generation of engineering leaders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Leadership & Architecture

  • Drive organizational architectural vision that aligns with business goals, future growth, and industry trends
  • Establish and enforce architectural principles, best practices, and governance frameworks across all engineering teams
  • Review and evaluate large-scale architectural proposals from engineering managers, ensuring alignment with company technical strategy
  • Guide technical prioritization across multiple teams and domains, connecting how various systems interact and impact each other
  • Maintain deep technical understanding across the entire technology stack to make informed strategic decisions
  • Balance short-term delivery needs with long-term system health and sustainability.

Operational Excellence & Reliability

  • Establish and maintain a strong culture of operational excellence across the organization.
  • Ensure critical systems are properly monitored, observable, and supported by effective alerting and incident response processes.
  • Oversee incident management practices, ensuring issues are detected early, communicated clearly, and resolved with minimal customer impact.
  • Drive accountability for operational performance, post-incident analysis, and continuous improvement.

Quality, Testing & Security

  • Co-lead, in close partnership with the Director of QA, the organization-wide quality and testing strategy, ensuring alignment between engineering, product, and business objectives.
  • Ensure that quality is a shared responsibility across engineering teams, embedding testing and quality practices throughout the software development lifecycle rather than treating them as a separate function.
  • Partner with the Director of QA to define, track, and review organization-level quality and reliability KPIs (e.g., change failure rate, defect trends, test coverage, time to resolution).
  • Hold Engineering Managers accountable for adopting and maintaining the quality standards and practices defined in collaboration with QA, and for the outcomes achieved by their teams.
  • Coordinate with QA leadership on the evolution of testing processes, tooling, and automation strategies, ensuring consistency, scalability, and effectiveness across teams.
  • Integrate quality and testing considerations into planning, delivery, and post-release processes, maintaining an end-to-end view of customer impact.

Leadership, People & Culture

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Engineering Managers, building strong leadership capability across the organization.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, psychological safety, and feedback.
  • Actively champion diversity, equity, and inclusion through inclusive leadership, hiring practices, and talent development.
  • Design and reinforce systems that support recognition, engagement, and long-term team health.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Serve as a key engineering representative in cross-functional and executive-level discussions, influencing organizational direction.
  • Communicate technical strategy, risks, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Resolve complex, high-stakes conflicts across teams or departments by finding balanced, outcome-driven solutions.
  • Lead and support large-scale cross-functional initiatives that span multiple departments.

Strategic Thinking & Business Impact

  • Translate company vision and business strategy into executable engineering plans.
  • Anticipate technical, organizational, and market challenges, proactively addressing risks before they impact the business.
  • Make high-impact decisions with long-term implications, balancing speed, quality, cost, and sustainability.
  • Own the success of major initiatives and ensure engineering efforts measurably contribute to business results.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of progressive engineering leadership experience, with experience managing managers.
  • Experience leading organizations of 25+ engineers across multiple domains.
  • Proven track record of leading engineering organizations through significant growth and change
  • Deep technical expertise across multiple domains with ability to evaluate complex architectural decisions
  • Experience driving cross-functional collaboration and influencing without authority at executive level
  • Strong background in operational excellence, including monitoring, incident response, and quality systems
  • Demonstrated success in building and scaling high-performing engineering teams
  • Exceptional communication skills, with experience influencing senior leadership and cross-functional partners
  • Demonstrated experience defining, cascading, and driving execution against organizational goals (e.g., OKRs), ensuring alignment between engineering initiatives and business objectives.
  • Excellent English and Spanish proficiency (written and verbal) is mandatory. Must be able to effectively communicate complex technical concepts, lead executive-level discussions, and document strategic decisions in both languages.

BENEFITS

  • Competitive annual salary.
  • Attractive benefits package, including health insurance and flexible benefits.
  • Annual bonus based on individual and company performance.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Remote work options available.
