What To Expect

Today, we're a remote-first team with a main office hub in LA, where the team goes in 2-3 days per week. The rest of our team is distributed across the U.S., with a growing presence in NYC. We strive to compensate and offer benefits that are above market for the given role and stage of the company. Pay may be a combination of salary, commission, and/or equity depending on role and seniority. Full time employees are eligible for health benefits and 401k enrollment.

You should expect a self-regulated PTO policy and a culture that promotes using at least three continuous weeks every year. (Yes, 12 days of camping with no cell service is encouraged—fresh air is good for us). We sign off at 2:30 p.m. on Fridays, observe long weekends, and respect that some days, you wake up and your head just ain’t in it.

About The Role

The Staff Accountant is a crucial member of the finance & accounting team reporting directly to the Head of Data and Financial Analysis. They are responsible for managing day-to-day accounting operations and supporting financial processes in close collaboration with our out-of-house accounting team and business teams. We're seeking someone with thorough knowledge of invoicing and a proven ability to perform accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR) tasks to maximize cash flow. This role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and the ability to contribute to process improvements. The Staff Accountant position offers an opportunity to play a vital role in Topanga’s financial operations while developing your skills in a dynamic environment.

Who You Are

You're a someone who is extremely organized with an intense attention to detail, but also with an eye on the horizon. You may not (yet) be a CPA but you’ve got a firm understanding of finance and accounting best practices, can work with Excel in your sleep (perhaps you’re even SQL curious), but are always on the look out for new and easier tools to get the job done faster.

You are passionate about your craft and thrive in environments where you and others around you tackle new challenges, then document processes, and improve them continuously. Perhaps you’ve worked in a start-up before, or in a small business and had to wear a lot of hats. Expect the opportunity to play lots of roles, but also expect the support from managers and mentorship from out-of-house accounting to help you get to the next stage of your career.

You enjoy collaborating and ideally have experience working directly with sales, client success, and other cross-functional teams. Accounting is a team sport, and you celebrate that element of it, even when we’re all working remotely and there there isn’t an in-office setting.

Core Responsibilities

• Oversee accounts payable and receivable processes to maintain healthy cash flow cycles
• Identify and implement automation solutions and strategies to improve AP/AR processes
• Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records through review and reconciliation processes
• Process invoices and payments, while identifying and resolving discrepancies to maintain financial accuracy
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with vendors and customers, ensuring seamless communication
• Support the out-of-house Accounting team with day-to-day accounting tasks and procedures
• Provide support to various functions within the Executive and Administrative Department as needed
• Stay informed and current with accounting standards, regulations, and industry trends
  
  
  

Required Skills & Experience

• 3+ years of experience in an accounting role
• Proficiency in accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR)
• Knowledge of accounting best practices, U.S. GAAP, laws, standards, and state/national regulations
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
• People-oriented team player and skilled communicator

• Licensed CPA or progress towards/eligible to sit for the CPA exam
• Experience with financial planning and analysis or interest in learning
