About the role

UNDO is on a mission to tackle the greatest challenge of our time: climate change. We have set-up a range of field trials and research studies designed to detect weathering signals, validate our geochemical model, provide robust evidence of enhanced rock weathering as a carbon removal tool, and show the agronomic co-benefits of enhanced weathering. To support our ambitious growth plans, we have a great opportunity for a field and lab technician to join our Canadian research team.

What you will do

This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading-edge company actively working on a promising solution to the climate emergency. You will play a hybrid role, assisting with soil and pore water sampling from all our research sites across Ontario, and supporting our analyses in our lab.

You will support the research team in the following tasks:

• Collecting soil and pore water samples from across our research sites
• Preparing soil samples for analysis
• Regular travel across sites in Ontario, especially around the Canadian Wollastonite mine in Seeley’s Bay
• Assist in recording, archiving, and managing soil sample collections for analysis
• Field services including GPS soil sampling
• Various laboratory work including the use of a Gallery Analyzer to measure pH, EC, anion content and alkalinity of both soil and water samples

About you

The role involves significant physical activity including manual handling of soil samples as well as working outdoors on research sites in all weathers. We are looking for someone with a passion for climate change who is keen to use their skills in soil science and environmental science to make a real-world impact. The ideal candidate will have an energetic, dedicated work ethic, excellent skills in soil sampling as well as excellent organisational and archiving capabilities.

Essential:

• Soil science or relevant environmental science degree (or equivalent qualification and experience)
• Experience with field soil sampling using a variety of techniques, including soil auger
• Experience in using a variety of laboratory techniques
• Valid driver’s licence, reliable transportation and willingness to travel
• Ability to conduct field work independently and unsupervised
• Ability to operate independently as well as work effectively in a diverse team

Desirable:

• Experience with running an autotitrator
• Pre-existing understanding of agricultural and productive soil science
• Experience with soil monitoring plot designs
• Experience with sensor technology Working environment
• Experience handling large amounts of data.

Working environment

This role will require travel across Ontario to relevant field sites, as well as considerable soil preparation work at the company’s laboratory located at Queens University, Kingston. This includes working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
