About Us:

At Vatn Systems, we are building the next underwater autonomy prime, starting with next-generation Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and a collaborative software platform for sea exploration and modern defense missions. Our AUVs integrate complex electro-mechanical systems, precision sensors, and advanced software to perform in the harshest marine environments.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Computer/Electrical Engineer with experience in firmware and electronic system design to join our fast-paced and innovative autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) startup. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and optimizing electrical systems, writing firmware, and designing printed circuit boards (PCBs) for our cutting-edge AUV technology. Your expertise will contribute to the advancement of our underwater control and navigation capabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • PCB Design: Develop schematic diagrams and oversee the layout design of high-quality PCBs, considering factors such as signal integrity, power distribution, thermal management, and manufacturability.
  • Firmware Development: Design, develop, and implement embedded firmware for various components of our AUV systems, including control systems, sensors, communication modules, and power management systems.
  • Component Selection: Research, evaluate, and select appropriate electronic components, including microcontrollers, sensors, connectors, and power management devices, ensuring they meet performance, reliability, and environmental requirements.
  • System Integration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software engineers and mechanical engineers, to integrate electrical systems seamlessly into the overall AUV architecture.
  • Testing and Verification: Design and execute rigorous testing plans to validate the functionality, performance, and reliability of electrical systems, firmware, and PCBs. Identify and resolve any issues or anomalies that arise during testing.
  • Documentation: Create detailed documentation, including specifications, test procedures, and user manuals, to ensure efficient and effective system maintenance, troubleshooting, and future development.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest advancements in firmware development, board design, and relevant technologies. Identify opportunities to enhance system performance, reduce cost, and optimize manufacturing processes.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, mechanical engineers, and project managers, to ensure successful project execution. Communicate technical concepts and ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering / Computer Engineering or a related field. Advanced degrees are a plus.
  • Experience: 2 to 5 years of experience in electrical engineering or computer engineering roles, specifically focusing on firmware development and board design. Experience in the marine or robotics industry is highly desirable.
  • PCB Design: Proficiency in PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer) and familiarity with PCB manufacturing processes. Knowledge of signal integrity analysis and simulation tools (e.g., SPICE) is advantageous.
  • Hardware Skills: Solid understanding of digital and analog circuit design, power electronics, and sensor integration. Experience with communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, CANbus, and Ethernet.
  • Firmware and Software: Strong proficiency in embedded firmware development using programming languages such as C/C++. Experience with Microchip dsPIC / STM STM32 microcontroller architectures. Experience with Embedded Linux Computers (e.g Rasberry Pi).
  • Test equipment: oscilloscopes, digital multi meters, electronic loads, etc.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and troubleshoot hardware and firmware issues. Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Collaboration: Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment and engage with external partners and suppliers.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment with changing priorities. Self-motivated with a passion for innovation and learning.

Vatn is an equal opportunity employer, and we welcome candidates from all backgrounds to apply. We look forward to reviewing your application and potentially having you join our team in shaping the future of autonomous underwater exploration.
