Shell Malaysia Upstream is a core country for Shell with both conventional and Deepwater assets that generate significant Free Cash Flow annually for RDS, supporting distributions and new investments in the transformation of Shell’s portfolio into the 2030s.
The Shell Malaysia Upstream portfolio consists of the following:
- A number of Shell Operated Ventures (SOV) Gas and Oil Producing fields in the Sarawak Asset that supply gas into the MLNG onshore plant in Bintulu;
- Substantial Non Operated Ventures (NOV) portfolio of deepwater oil asset in the Block G PSC (SNP), producing gas fields in KBB PSC and SK-320 PSC (Pegaga), and several other gas fields in development and execution within our gas heartland.
- The Gumusut-Kakap-Geronggong-Jagus East (GKGJE) and Malikai deepwater oil fields in the Sabah Asset that deliver 130 kboepd annually and with ongoing infill projects GKGJE Ph 4 (Spud Q1 2024).
The Malaysia Development and Subsurface team consists of about 170 Exploration and Development professionals that are focused on the safe execution and operation of our wells and assets, in delivering production gains through prudent WRFM, and in delivering more than 50 new development & exploration wells over the next 5 years to enable future growth and sustain our business into the future.
The Development Subsurface & Wells (DWS) department in Malaysia is responsible to grow our resource base and increase the value of our assets through the safe maturation and execution of new development wells.
The role provides exposure to a wide range of subsurface opportunities across the value chain with an immediate impact on Malaysia’s daily oil an gas production. This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated and driven candidate with a passion for working in Malaysia’s oil and gas sector and able to provide creativity, out of the box thinking, a learner mindset and a focus on getting results.
What you’ll be doing
This position reports into a multi-disciplinary team within the Growth & Portfolio organization within DSW Malaysia. In this position, you will be responsible for the safe and successful maturation and (well) execution of HCM activities. More specifically, working with the team to:
- Provide RE support for studies through decision gates to FID whilst simplifying and scaling work to the decisions required.
- Provide RE support for upcoming drilling campaigns.
- Ensure efficient planning, safe execution and close out of upcoming drilling campaigns
- Support the healthy opportunity funnel for the asset, ensuring timely maturation of development opportunities through decision gates to FID, simplifying and scaling work to support the decisions required, whilst complying with the Group Opportunity Realisation Standards (ORS) requirements
- Ensure safe and effective handover to the Asset and WRFM teams upon successful start-up of new development wells
- Build, maintain and own dynamic simulation models for the assets
- Prioritize & simplify work processes to deliver fit for purpose solutions
The staff is also expected to contribute to RE discipline health and business improvements in the asset. This position provides an opportunity for both technical broadening, discipline integration and expertise deepening, and requires highly motivated individuals with the capacity and flexibility to work on a diverse range of projects/fields.
What you bring

- Minimum of 4 years of reservoir engineering experience, in WRFM or Studies
- Knowledgeable in field lifecycle development, Well delivery to Abandonment, production forecasting and business planning activities.
- Knowledgeable in Petroleum Resource Volume Management and Reporting (PRRMS) and hydrocarbon maturation.
- Knowledgeable in Integrated Reservoir Modelling, opportunity identification and value creation. Compositional modelling and/or CO2 injection experiences is a plus.
- Knowledgeable with PVT sampling & modelling, and awareness of H2S Prediction
- Knowledgeable in Pore Pressure Prediction
- Working skills with Reservoir Engineering software. Dynamic Simulation (Mores, Eclipse etc), OFM, IPSM-GAP, MBAL, PTA (Ecrin).
- University degree in a technical/scientific subject, preferably in Petroleum Engineering.
- 4+ years working experience as a RE with emphasis on IRM studies and field development studies
- Team player with the ability to work in an integrated multi-disciplinary and diverse cultural environment.
- Learner mindset
- Strong communication skills with ability to interface well.
- Strong technical foundation with the ability to work independently and a desire to learn.
