About Watershed
Watershed is the enterprise sustainability platform. Companies like Airbnb, Carlyle Group, FedEx, Visa, and Dr. Martens use Watershed to manage climate and ESG data, produce audit-ready metrics for voluntary and regulatory reporting including CSRD, and drive real decarbonization. We are looking for team members who love product-building, want to work hard at a mission-oriented startup, and will collaborate with us in shaping the culture of a growing team.
We have offices in San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Mexico City (launching soon!) and remote team members across the US and Europe. We hope that you'll be interested in joining us!
The role
Do you love to build great technology and great teams? Watershed is working to scale a world-class engineering team, and we’re hiring for an experienced Engineering Manager to help lead this work. You will join a team of peer Engineering Managers and technical leads to define the culture and practice of engineering at Watershed.
Science and data are core to Watershed. We’re looking for an experienced technical leader to manage a hybrid team of climate scientists, data scientists, and software engineers to build the internal content platform and data foundations that power our footprinting methodologies. Your team will be responsible for designing and building data models, pipelines, and purpose-built AI tools to power sustainable decision making for the largest and most complex businesses in the world.
In this role, you will:
Be responsible for the core sustainability datasets, estimation methodologies and data models that power sustainability measurement and decision making
Work with science, product and technical leads to set our scientific and technical roadmap and data strategy
Build and manage a diverse team of climate scientists, data scientists, and software engineers
Manage execution and delivery. Build the processes and system to ensure that we are shipping correct data and code, quickly
Inspire and lead the team through the next phases of growth
You might be a good fit if:
3-5+ yrs of engineering team management experience
Have 8+ years of overall developer and management experience in total
Have grown and managed teams of 9+ engineers
You have experience managing, setting direction, and leading execution for technical teams in fast paced environments
You have a strong background in data engineering or data centric technical field (machine learning, AI, or a related technical field)
You are a great communicator of technical topics
You have a track record of spinning up quickly and deeply in complex or subject matter heavy environments. Climate science knowledge is not a pre-requisite but we are looking for eagerness and ability to learn the domain.
This position is required to be in person in our San Francisco office.
Must be willing to work from an office 4 days per week (except for remote roles)
Watershed has hub offices in San Francisco, New York and London, and satellite offices in Sydney, Paris, Berlin, and Mexico City (opening summer 2025!). Where we have offices, employees are expected to be in office for 4 days per week. Certain jobs are open to being remote and will be specifically noted on the jobs page and in the job description if so.
What’s the interview process like?
It starts the same for every candidate: getting to know the team members through 1 to 2 conversations about Watershed, your experience, and your interests. Next steps can vary by role, but usual next steps are a skill or experience interview (e.g. a coding interview for an engineer, a portfolio review for a designer, deeper experience call for other roles) which leads to a virtual or in person interview panel. We prioritize transparency and lack of surprise throughout the process.
What if I need accommodations for my interview?
At Watershed, we are dedicated to ensuring an inclusive recruitment process. We provide reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities, long-term conditions, mental health needs, religious observances, neurodivergence, or pregnancy-related support requirements. If you need assistance during your process, please contact your recruiter.
