About Work on Climate: leading non-profit mobilizing talent to build a regenerative green economy; largest online climate career/action community; beyond jobs, empowering professionals to transform companies, industries, and communities. About the team: Data Infrastructure team builds data systems for member, community, and program data; geo-located across Canada/US/Europe; weekly meeting Tuesday @ 9am PST. Role Summary: experienced, dependable, highly technical volunteer Data Engineering Team Lead to steer technical direction and coordinate implementation. Time commitment: 10 hours/week consistently for at least 6 months; attend weekly meeting; be consistently available/responsive daily. What will I do: manage the team (coordinate work, motivate volunteers, accountability, recruit, hands-on as needed); guide technical direction/architecture; champion adoption of new tools/practices (including AI-assisted workflows); work with the founder to align with org evolution. Skills/qualities: 5+ years data engineering (team/project management and coding); experience with several of GCP, Typescript, Python, dbt, Hex, Dagster (or equivalents); AI-native development workflow; plus for ML serving/evaluation or LLM-powered systems; track record driving adoption of new tools; experience leading all-volunteer teams preferred. Personal qualities: extremely dependable; pragmatic; comfortable with direct, kind feedback and accountability; able to get to the most important point. Common challenges: volunteer availability and management; building the simplest viable system with limited resources; learning new tools exceptionally quickly.
