Our online community — the world’s largest climate career and action community — has helped thousands of people find climate jobs, start companies, and build impactful networks.About the team: Our Metrics & Data team builds the data infrastructure for Work On Climate. We collect, organize, and analyze data about our members, community activity, and programs for performance understanding and effective implementation. We are geo located across Canada, US, Europe; weekly meeting on Tuesday @ 9am PST (UTC-8).Role Summary: We’re looking for an experienced, dependable, highly technical volunteer Data Engineering Team Lead to steer the team’s technical direction and coordinate implementation.Time commitment: • 10 hours/week consistently for a minimum of 6 months, including ability to join the weekly meeting on Tuesdays @ 9am PST (UTC-8) • Be consistently available and responsive to teammates and leadership dailyWhat will I do? • Lead an all-volunteer data engineering team implementing and maintaining our data infrastructure • Manage the team: coordinate work, motivate volunteers, ensure accountability, recruit, and pitch in hands-on as needed • Guide technical direction and serve as trusted architectural expert • Champion adoption of new tools/practices, including AI-assisted engineering and data science • Work with our founder Eugene to align direction with organizational evolutionWhat skills and personal qualities make for a fit?Skills and track record: • 5+ years professional experience in data engineering, including team and project management and individual coding • Experience with several of: GCP, Typescript, Python, dbt, Hex, Dagster (or equivalents) • “AI-native” development workflow; actively follow emerging AI tools • Big plus: experience with ML serving/evaluation or LLM-powered systems (chatbots/search) • Track record driving adoption of new tools/practices • Previous experience leading all-volunteer teams strongly preferredPersonal qualities: • Extremely dependable; sustain multi-month commitments based on internal motivation • Pragmatic; translate high-level vision into practical steps • Comfortable with direct but kind feedback/accountability across roles and styles • Able to get to the most important point; explain and learn complex topics efficientlyCommon Challenges: • Availability of lead and volunteers; manage through recruiting, communication, delegation, motivation, accountability • Build the simplest viable systems given an all-volunteer team; exercise strong technical judgment • Stack changes; learn new tools exceptionally quickly with minimal guidanceWhat’s in it for me? • Help program teams understand what works and enable data-driven programs that help members make a climate difference • Lead and be part of a distinctive team and deepen leadership skills • Learn from and contribute to an exceptional mostly-volunteer organization • Enjoy a supportive, positive work culture; we have each other’s backs and support your path to working in climateI’m interested!
