Work on Climate (WoCl) is a leading non-profit focused on mobilizing humanity’s talent to build a regenerative, climate-positive economy. You probably know us for our online community — the world’s largest climate career and action community — which has helped thousands of people find climate jobs, start companies, and build impactful networks. We’ve been featured in Fast Company, the New York Times, Wired, and more. About the TeamThe People Operations team focuses on putting the volunteers first by humanizing impersonal systems and continuously improving volunteer engagement, development, and retention. We are responsible for creating a culture and environment that makes volunteers feel happy and proud to contribute to our organization. Today, our team is 6 total members geo-located in the USA and the UK. Our standard meeting schedule time is on Tuesdays at 11:30 am PST. Role SummaryThe People and Culture Specialist supports engagement and connection across the volunteer community at Work on Climate. With direction from the People and Culture Manager, this role focuses on creating meaningful touchpoints with volunteers, helping them feel supported, recognized, and connected to the broader mission. Time commitment5 hours/week consistently for the next 6 months. We’d like a minimum of 6 months, and love it when volunteers stay on longer. What’s in it for me?Make a significant impact on the volunteer experience by developing engagement and retention strategies; opportunity to work with a passionate team dedicated to addressing climate change; build a strong climate network in your area of interest; collaborate with top-notch teammates passionate about climate; a great line on your resume! Employers know and respect us. What will I do?Serve as our internal Onboarding Specialist to host a once a month “New Volunteer Cohort”; be a vibrant presence in Slack, creatively facilitate connections and build community between siloed teams; support volunteer appreciation and recognition efforts; help gather and share feedback to inform strategies for deeper volunteer engagement; assist with internal documentation, messaging, or creative ways to build team culture. What skills and commitment do I need?Strong People/HR background (minimum 2 years in People/HR-related roles); enthusiasm for community building and people-centered work; strong communication skills and comfort engaging in group settings; ability to contribute reliably each week and participate in Tuesday team meetings; team-oriented mindset and openness to feedback and collaboration; interest in growing experience in people ops, HR, or culture-focused roles; comfort using tools like Slack, Notion, Canva, and Zoom (or willingness to learn). Common ChallengesVolunteer schedules vary, so engagement efforts need to be inclusive and flexible; creating connection in a remote, asynchronous environment takes intention and creativity; maintaining consistency and coordination with a lean, part-time team can require proactive communication; ensuring that all volunteers feel included and valued is an ongoing challenge; this role requires really strong teamwork with the rest of the People Ops team. I’m interested! What do I do?Please fill out this application form to tell us about your skills and interests in volunteering with our awesome team. If you are selected for an interview, our team will be in touch in 1–2 weeks.
