Work on Climate (WoCl) is a leading non-profit focused on mobilizing humanity’s talent to build a regenerative, climate-positive economy. You probably know us for our online community — the world’s largest climate career and action community — which has helped thousands of people find climate jobs, start companies, and build impactful networks. We’ve been featured in Fast Company, the New York Times, Wired, and more. Our work is entering a new chapter beyond helping individuals find climate jobs. We’re now supporting professionals to engage in climate leadership — organizing, mobilizing, and transforming whole sectors and regions toward regenerative futures, through regional chapters of issue-focused work. (Read more about this transition in our announcement post). About the team Join the Marketing team and help us grow Work on Climate’s library of content! We’re creating climate thought leadership pieces, research insights, event summaries, search engine-optimized content and more to help more people work on climate. Our meetings happen on Thursdays, 11AM PT. Role Summary Work on Climate is in the middle of a major strategic shift — moving from primarily supporting individuals in career transitions to cultivating leaders and action networks that can transform entire fields. This role is for volunteers who want to help shape and implement the communications strategy that brings our 35,000+ community members along on this journey. You will help us: 1) Draft the communications plan that explains our strategy shift to members and partners. 2) Execute that plan across multiple channels (Slack, website, newsletters, events). 3) Gather and analyze member feedback to refine how we tell our story. ⏰ Time commitment - 5 hours/week consistently for at least the next 6 months (we’d love you to stay longer!) - Weekly meeting attendance is required (See meeting time above in the “About the team” section) 🎁 What’s in it for me? In addition to playing a critical role in enabling the climate talent transition, you will get to: - Apply strategic communications, change management, and storytelling skills in a real-world nonprofit setting. - Gain hands-on experience designing and rolling out organizational change communications. - Build a strong climate network in your area of interest. - Collaborate with top-notch teammates passionate about climate. 🛠️ What will I do? As a Strategic Communications Volunteer, you will: - Help develop a clear communications roadmap for explaining WoCl’s new strategy to members. - Design messaging frameworks that articulate the differences between “finding a climate job” and “turning your field into a force for regeneration.” - Translate high-level strategy into compelling stories, examples, and content for different channels. - Execute the plan by drafting Slack updates, newsletters, and onboarding material revisions. Your work will directly determine how well our members understand and embrace the changes, which in turn will shape their ability to self-organize into effective chapters and action networks. ✅ What skills and commitment do I need? You will need to be highly self-motivated and capable of breaking down large tasks into smaller components, prioritizing your work, and identifying when you need help (and asking for it!). - Strong strategic thinking skills (ability to map out a communication plan, not just write content). - Excellent writing and editing skills. - Experience with change communications, marketing, or storytelling preferred. - Ability to analyze feedback and adjust strategy accordingly. - Bonus: background in organizational change, community organizing, or design thinking 🤔 Common Challenges - Translating complex strategy into simple, motivating language. - Balancing strategic planning with the urgency of day-to-day content needs. - Working across multiple channels while keeping a consistent voice and message. ✋🏽 I’m interested! What do I do? Yay! We’re excited to learn more about you. Please fill out this application form to tell us about your skills and interests in volunteering with our awesome team. We strive to reach out to applicants within 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, our recruitment process includes a 30-minute screening with a recruiter and a 30-minute interview with the Team Lead.
