We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Control Systems Engineer to join our industrial automation team. The experience of a qualified Control Systems Engineer to assist in the creation, design, and development of state of the art equipment for fusion systems will be indispensable as we continue to grow the organization towards a power-producing Inertial Fusion Energy reactor (IFE).
As a Control Systems Engineer in our Controls group, you will be responsible for the design and development of operational, manual, and automated control systems, interfacing with custom and off-the-shelf hardware and software, creating User Interfaces, programming custom and off the shelf hardware, and acting as go-between to the various design departments. You will initially focus on creating the underlying architecture for Xcimer prototype systems and continue through to the design and demonstration of a power-producing IFE reactor. We are looking for our engineers to apply their technical expertise, problem solving skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact the future of energy!

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop control systems and algorithms for industrial application with a focus on ease of operability
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including scientists and other engineers
  • Optimize control algorithms and data acquisition for laser systems
  • Support the design and testing of scalable control systems that will be quickly iterated on
  • Program PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces), computers, and various other embedded hardware and instrumentation
  • Conduct system integration and commissioning on-site, ensuring that systems operate correctly in the operational environment
  • Develop technical documentation for system configuration and design, system controls, and system safety
  • Assist in the development and creation of system requirements and goals
  • Ensure all engineering projects and processes confirm to environmental laws and health and safety standards

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in control systems engineering, preferably in energy systems, space and defense, advanced manufacturing, or related high-tech industries
  • Experience in designing and implementing control systems in a regulated, safety-critical environment
  • Strong proficiency with PLC programming and familiarity with brands such as Allen Bradley, Siemens, or Schneider Electric
  • Strong proficiency with LabVIEW programming and familiarity with specifying instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition equipment
  • Experience with HMI and UI (User Interface) design
  • Solid understanding of industrial communications protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Serial (RS-232/485), and TCP/IP
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working with multiple teams
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee of granted asylum

Desired

  • Familiarity with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems
  • Certifications relevant to control systems engineering, such as Certified LabVIEW Architect (CLA) or Certified Automation Professional (CAP)
  • Experience with laser or optical systems and their integration into existing control architectures
