Joby Overview
Overview
Joby Aviation seeks a highly motivated and organized individual to join our test engineering team, supporting the development of test systems used to validate flight-critical hardware and aircraft systems. This role is instrumental in designing and implementing the systems required for structural, environmental, and functional testing of safety-critical components in our electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
You will contribute directly to ensuring that the data collected from these test platforms informs design decisions and supports certification milestones. Our environment is fast-paced, hands-on, and highly collaborative—ideal for individuals passionate about aerospace innovation.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test systems using open-source, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), or proprietary tools for validating aircraft line-replaceable units (LRUs), subsystems, and full systems.
- Collaborate with aircraft design and test engineering teams to define test system requirements, informed by component architecture and operational environments.
- Apply first-principles thinking to replicate mission-representative loading conditions and extreme testing scenarios for LRUs and system-level testing.
- Develop and maintain complete system documentation—including design analyses, BOMs, wiring diagrams, and assembly instructions—for traceability and configuration control.
- Build, integrate, and maintain test systems in accordance with documentation, tracking all changes and revisions throughout the system lifecycle.
- Support the drafting of formal test procedures, instrumentation guidelines, user interfaces, and test fixture designs to ensure representative testing aligned with defined requirements.
- Assist in the execution of structural, environmental, and functional tests to validate design intent, manufacturing quality, and regulatory compliance.
- Provide technical guidance to Test Engineers, Assembly Technicians, and supporting personnel throughout development and execution phases.
- Own assigned projects from concept through delivery, ensuring timely and high-quality execution.
Required
- B.S. in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field with 4+ years of experience; or M.S. with 3+ years of experience; or equivalent practical experience
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to engineering
- Demonstrated experience in the development of HIL test systems
- Proficient with data acquisition and control tools such as LabVIEW, VeriStand, SpeedGoat, dSPACE, Beckhoff, etc.
- Experience with analytical tools, data analysis workflows, or model-based systems engineering (MBSE)
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation (oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, programmable power supplies, etc.)
- Working knowledge of mechanical design, CAD software, and the creation of manufacturing drawings
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams
Desired
- M.S. or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline
- 6+ years of professional experience in aerospace, robotics, or related industries
- End-to-end experience designing electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical systems, including linear and rotational actuators
- Proficiency in object-oriented programming and actor-based software architectures in LabVIEW, Python, and MATLAB/Simulink
- Expertise in software verification, automated regression testing, and HIL validation strategies with traceability to system requirements
- Strong understanding of Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), FPGA architectures, and processor loop timing analysis
- Experience architecting Hardware Abstraction Layers (HAL) to decouple application logic from hardware interfaces (e.g., analog I/O, digital GPIO, UART, SPI, I²C)
- Familiarity with high-voltage systems and industrial electronics, with an emphasis on safety practices
- Experience with regulatory compliance and aircraft certification processes (e.g., DO-160, DO-178)
- Familiarity with requirement management tools (e.g., Polarion, DOORS) and test case documentation workflows
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git, SVN)
- Proactive mindset in identifying and implementing process and tooling improvements
- Personal interest in aviation; hands-on experience with aircraft homebuilding or rapid prototyping is a plus
