Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a Materials & Process Engineer with expertise in material engineering and process development & validation to join our polymer & metallic materials and process team. The engineer will support the Joby aircraft scale up in collaboration with a strong team of manufacturing and design engineers. The person will develop and qualify application and fabrication parameters, develop control plans, and drive continuous improvement. This individual must be highly organized and self-driven while possessing a deep understanding of manufacturability and quality control. This position is exciting and rewarding, as the engineer will promptly see their ideas grow from concept to creation due to the fast pace of Joby Aviation.
Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize process parameters and assist in design revisions and continuous improvement to improve product quality and yield
- Design and execute material qualification campaigns
- Drive process validation from design of experiment through report authoring for a diverse range of processes including fastening and other hardware installation, welding, heat treatment, and adhesive bonding
- Provide documentation of process development, quality control plans, and standardized practices supporting production
- Support design engineers, quality engineers, and supply managers in analysis of components and assemblies, driving improvements at suppliers and supporting continuous design improvements
- Support Supply Chain and Supply Industrialization Engineering in managing vendor relations including new technology evaluation, collaborative failure analysis, and validation of materials, processes, and procedures
Required
- B.S. in Materials Engineering or relevant degree
- 2+ years of relevant experience
- Strong listening and verbal communication skills
- Excellent problem solving and teamwork skills while working with cross functional teams
- Experience prototyping or manufacturing in a professional environment
- Proficient in authoring process documentation
- Expertise in non-composite materials and processes used in aviation/aerospace manufacturing
- Basic understanding of aerospace metals, including common alloys and their use in parts, plus familiarity with machining, coatings, and heat treatment
- Basic knowledge of metallurgy, including microstructure, failure analysis, and non-destructive testing (NDT)
- Understanding of corrosion types and prevention methods
- Familiar with Industry Standards (ASTM’s, AMS, Mil Specs)
Desired
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Engineering
- 5+ years of relevant experience
- Experience in aviation or aerospace industry
- Experience with hardware manufacturing environments and systems
- Experience working in a design engineering organization
Additional Information
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $85,300 - $141,800/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
