Overview

The Senior Payroll Specialist will be responsible for supporting the bi-weekly payroll cycle, leading compliance audits, reviewing and documenting our policies and procedures, and assisting employees and managers with payroll-related questions. This role will also heavily support HRIS and Payroll system initiatives, including participating in RFPs, system implementations, integrations, and end-to-end testing. The Senior Payroll Specialist will be highly proficient with spreadsheets and possess a high attention to detail. This position sits within our People organization and will interact with stakeholders across the company; therefore, the ability to communicate clearly and concisely is a requirement for this role

Responsibilities

  • Support the bi-weekly payroll cycle, including timecard review and pay data imports
  • Perform bi-weekly audits to ensure policy and statutory compliance
  • Conduct payroll compliance reviews to ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations, internal policies, and audit requirements
  • Document payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Maintain and troubleshoot physical time clocks
  • Set up payroll in new states and submit required informational and tax filings in a timely manner
  • Partner with the HRIS Analyst and cross-functional stakeholders on HRIS and Payroll system initiatives, including RFP support, system implementations, integrations, and data validation
  • Execute payroll and HRIS system testing, including parallel testing, configuration validation, and end-to-end process testing to ensure accuracy, compliance, and data integrity
  • Identify system gaps, document requirements, and support enhancements that improve payroll accuracy, controls, and reporting

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field with a minimum of 7 years of payroll experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience using ADP Workforce Now; experience supporting payroll system implementations, integrations, or upgrades preferred
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, including INDEX, MATCH, SUMIFS, and data analysis functions
  • Demonstrated experience conducting payroll compliance reviews, audits, and controls to ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations
  • Strong understanding of payroll-related laws, regulations, and compliance standards (e.g., FLSA, IRS, and state/local tax requirements)
  • Experience supporting HRIS and Payroll system testing, including parallel testing, data validation, and end-to-end process verification
  • Self-directed with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing payroll data, reports, and system outputs
  • Proven ability to identify discrepancies, troubleshoot system or payroll issues, and resolve them efficiently
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex payroll and system concepts to stakeholders
  • Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines

Desired

  • 2 or more years of experience in a startup or high-growth environment
  • Knowledge of SOX compliance standards and experience supporting payroll controls, audits, and documentation
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms
  • Ability to build, maintain, and enhance dashboards that provide insights into payroll trends, compliance results, audit findings, and metrics
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement mindset, with a focus on optimizing processes, controls, and system functionality
  • Experience supporting Global Payroll operations
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP), Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Global Payroll Management Certification
  • Experience supporting manufacturing/production employee populations

Additional Information

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $74,600 - $126,900/year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
