This position is responsible for both routine and non-routine processing of hazardous, radioactive and mixed waste at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Hazardous Waste Handling Facility (HWHF).
What You Will Do:
· Perform waste work activities required to implement Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s (LBNL) Waste Management Program as necessary and assigned to assure safe and compliant Waste Management group policies and procedures. In general, these activities are as follows, but are not limited to:
o Perform a wide range of routine and non-routine processes based on WMG procedures including; waste (radioactive/hazardous/mixed) receipt/collection, transportation, storage, labeling, treatment, consolidating, inspecting, compacting, sampling, and packaging to facilitate offsite shipment of hazardous, radioactive and mixed wastes
o Responsible to perform radiological surveys/assessments and to complete Radioactive Isotopic Journal entries
o Perform and analyze radiological surveys on liquid scintillation counter
o Utilize waste requisition and other tracking systems; obtains representative samples of wastes (hazardous/radioactive/mixed); packages and lab-packs wastes
o Assist in completing hazardous and radioactive waste profiles, manifests, and shipping documents, and maintains waste processing records
o Conduct daily/weekly/monthly, etc. inspections of the facility, including vehicles, associated waste handling and safety equipment, and waste containers
o Assist in waste minimization efforts by doing the following: optimizing consolidation of bulk wastes and lab packs, segregating non-hazardous and non-radioactive wastes, identifying recyclable materials, and recommending additional minimization measures
o Process and prepares packages and documents for special wastes, such as asbestos, contaminated soil, and recyclable materials
o Oversee and assist waste processing contractors and transporters by following well defined procedures and checklists
o Assist with maintaining material (waste) and supply inventory in an organized, clean and safe configuration
o Evaluate and implements all required safety practices including; surveys, contamination control, dosimetry, posting/labeling, training, and associated documentation
o Assist with hazardous/radioactive material spill response
o Assist in inspecting and maintaining HWHF, vehicles, and equipment such as emergency showers, eye washes, spill kits, first aid kits, etc.
o Assist with special projects such as, legacy waste, TRU waste, Building D&D wastes, etc.
o Perform radiological surveys (radiation, contamination, and airborne radioactive) and generate associated documents, reports and audits in support of assigned area(s)
o Post/label areas and items controlled for regulatory purposes
o Report processing and work order accomplishments, contractor activities, nonconformances, equipment and supply needs
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
· May support assessments, audits and other measures needed regarding incidents.
· May assist with waste certification training to LBNL generators and Operations and Team personnel.
· May act as an emergency responder at the OSHA-defined First Responder Operations Level of competency.
· Exercise judgment and initiative within defined procedures and practices and with supervisor over sighted to determine appropriate EH&S action and work methods.
· Frequent customer contact to provide solutions to EH&S technical problems associated with specific projects.
What is Required:
· Two years of related work experience in Waste Management or similar field OR a combination of education and experience in technical knowledge and principles.
· Experience in radiation measurement and radioisotope handling principles including monitoring, analysis and radioisotope identification.
· Must be able to perform physical requirements of the position including: approx. 2 hours per day sitting, approx. 4 hours per day of standing and/or walking.
· Some duties of this position require up to 1 hour per day of the following types of hand use: fine manipulation, keyboard/mouse use, simple and/or power grasping. Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to perform the physical aspects of waste handling including some routine squatting, kneeling, climbing, bending, and twisting.
· Must have/maintain a current driver’s license in order to drive a government vehicle across Lab and public roadways.
Desired Qualifications:
· Previous RCRA facility operations experience.
· Experience working in a research facility.
Notes:
· This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
· This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
· Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
· The full hourly range for the Level 2 position is $29.33-$42.68. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
· The full hourly range for the Level 3 position is $31.70-$46.49. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

· Work will primarily be performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
