Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the ALS (Advance Light Source) is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technologist who will be involved in providing diverse technical support in mechanical technology, demonstrating expertise in independent work on complex assignments, supporting the accelerator and its users. This includes developing specifications, planning methods, and applying broad mechanical and electro-mechanical knowledge to achieve desired outcomes. Additionally, there's potential for informal team leadership within the role.

What You Will Do:

  • Determine methods and procedures on new assignments.
  • At this level you should be able to perform most of the activities: Fabricate, assemble, machine, install, operate, test, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot equipment processes or systems associated with mechanisms, vacuum systems, cryogenic equipment and related scientific research apparatus.
  • Understand implications of work and make recommendations for solutions.
  • Use substantial knowledge and expertise in mechanical and electro-mechanical technology theory, scientific principles, and technical mathematics to effectively and efficiently carry out assignments.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints, sketches, parts lists, and assembly diagrams. Exercise independent judgment; develop and follow general specifications, plan work methods and component, tooling, equipment and material selection to achieve desired results.
  • Participate in the design process with scientific and engineering staff; provide design details where lacking and recommend modifications to engineering designs as required.
  • Perform complex tests and measurements of components, assemblies, equipment and systems to assure conformance to specifications.
  • Document process and final results of assignments including processes, procedures, tests and standards used and any equipment/system modifications.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Possesses the potential to assume a leadership role within a team informally.

What is Required:

Level 3:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 4 – 6 years of work related experience.
  • Substantial technical background in mechanical and/or electromechanical technology with the ability to successfully accomplish assignments by exercising independent judgment with limited guidance and supervision.
  • Knowledge, skill and experience performing general set-ups, testing, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, operation and maintenance of complex mechanical, electromechanical and scientific apparatus, equipment and systems. Significant work experience in assembling, testing and measuring complex mechanical components and equipment using sophisticated measuring and testing tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read and correctly interpret complex blueprints, sketches, parts lists, layout and assembly drawings and operation, calibration and repair manuals.
  • General knowledge of mechanical equipment design procedures and techniques.

Level 4 (in addition to Level 3):

  • Typically requires a minimum of more than 6 years of related experience.
  • Desired to have an AA degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or similar.
  • Equivalent experience and/or formal industrial or military training is also valued.
  • Experience as a highly skilled specialist that has creative and unique problem solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be independent and innovative in how work is resolved and administered both as a contributor and/or a team leader.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficient in general personal computer applications, including spreadsheets, databases, word processors, and CAD/CAM software. Capable of utilizing these tools for various tasks such as data analysis, document creation, and computer-aided design and manufacturing.

Salary:

The hourly range for the 706.3 (Level 3) position is $40.63-$58.90. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

The hourly range for the 706.4 (Level 4) position is $46.71-$67.73. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
