Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Engineering Division currently has multiple openings for Mechanical Technicians to join our team on the ALS and CXRO programs.

Under the guidance of a mentor or work lead, you will be exposed to a variety of routine technical work including assembling, installing, set up, operating, testing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, fabricating, machining, or modifying standard scientific apparatus, parts, components, and equipment. You will also work with systems associated and not limited to mechanical instruments, various particle accelerators, optical systems, ultra high vacuum systems, particle detectors, permanent magnets, electromagnets, cryogenic equipment, and related scientific research apparatus.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform routine technical work including assembling, installing, fabricating, machining, setup, operating, testing, and inspecting.
  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, or modification of standard apparatus, parts and components, devices, equipment, processes or systems associated with mechanical instruments, particle accelerators, optical systems, high/ultrahigh vacuum systems, particle detectors, cryogenic equipment and related scientific research apparatus.
  • Under the guidance and mentorship of senior staff, incumbents will perform routine and moderately complex assignments and follow general specifications and work methods to achieve desired results.
  • Identify mechanical parts and components including sizes, ratings, tolerances, finishes, materials, and appropriate applications.
  • Follow assembly, installation and safety procedures of complex mechanical systems or components.
  • Utilize a wide variety of engineering metals, composites, and plastics in precision assemblies and scientific processes.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Apply broad and varied knowledge of mechanical and electro-mechanical theory and practice to accomplish assignments.
  • Implement manufacturing engineering processes: including building or setting up equipment.
  • Execute careful and precise handling of equipment using pallet jacks, forklifts, cranes, hoists, and rigging.
  • Interpret elementary engineering drawings, sketches, parts lists, component layout, and assembly diagrams.
  • Navigate through different laboratory environments using various lab equipment and processes with complex systems, or perform mechanical or diagnostic tests.
  • Work with vacuum technology systems, various pumping methods, UHV assembly, troubleshooting and leak checking.
  • Test and repair various electro-mechanical systems or instruments. Run tests or fault diagnostics on equipment to locate and address a problem; repair, order and/or replace parts as needed.
  • Work in a clean room environment with an understanding of contamination control and performing assembly tasks in that environment.
  • Ensure quality control by following quality assurance procedures, as in checking/qualifying deliverables, performing tests, and collecting data to be analyzed.

Mechanical Engineering Technician (Level 1) Specific Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of a mentor, candidate will be exposed to a variety of routine technical work including fabrication, assembling, machining, installing, set up, operating, testing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, or modifying standard apparatus, parts and components, devices, equipment, processes or systems.
  • Learn to utilize a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic materials, formulations and processes.

Mechanical Engineering Technician (Level 2) Specific Responsibilities:

  • Under limited supervision or independently on special assignments, provide broad and varied technical support at journey level in the field of mechanical technology in one or more areas.
  • Perform moderately complex assignments and exercise independent judgment.
  • Follow general specifications and plan work methods to achieve desired characteristics or results.
  • May prepare and use computer programs and operate associated equipment to accomplish assignments.
  • May lead or instruct others in applying technical concepts which require both standard and unique methods.
  • Develop, design, fabricate, assemble, machine, install, set up, operate, test, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, or modify a variety of scientific apparatus, equipment, components, devices, or systems and perform related technical support activities.
