Berkeley Lab's Ecology Division is hiring a Multi-scale Microbial Modeling Research Scientist to enhance microbial process representation and prediction in biogeochemical models. This role involves integrating knowledge of microbial traits and advancing trait-based approaches to study soil organism interactions and their evolution under changing climate and land use. The scientist will combine theory and experimental data within a numerical modeling framework to understand and predict complex systems, focusing on scale bridging and hierarchical modeling.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop new approaches to integrate 'omic' data for improving microorganism representation in biogeochemical models.
  • Develop physics-based models across scales (individuals, populations, communities).

What is Required:

  • PhD in ecology, microbiology, biogeochemistry or a related discipline
  • Significant experience in mathematical modeling of microbial systems, particularly trait-based approaches.
  • Knowledge of microbial biophysical, thermodynamic, physiological and metabolic traits particularly those relevant to soil carbon dynamics and biogeochemical cycling.
  • Strong background in mathematics and statistics
  • Demonstrated ability to develop methods to evaluate models against a diverse range of observations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work within an integrated team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a culture of inclusion in the workplace and open science.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in theoretical physics or environmental chemistry.
  • Demonstrated innovation in the use of microbial omic information to derive key microbial traits.
  • Working knowledge of systems biology and metabolic modeling approaches.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 5 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
  • The full salary range for this position is $7,445 - $13,897 per month. The salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
