In this exciting role, you will be part of the Nanofabrication group, engaging in projects to fabricate x-ray/EUV diffractive optics and engineered nanostructures with critical features ranging from 10-100 nm. The Center for X-ray Optics (CXRO) at LBNL is a recognized world leader in developing x-ray optics and EUV lithography technology. With a suite of nanofabrication capabilities, including plasma etching and evaporation deposition, and partnerships with the Molecular Foundry, CXRO provides state-of-the-art technologies such as electron beam lithography, atomic layer deposition, and direct self-assembly.
What You Will Do:
- Conduct research and development of nanopatterning and nanofabrication, primarily based on electron beam lithography, for areas such as state-of-the-art diffractive optics, material research, and semiconductor lithography research.
- Follow established procedures to fabricate common diffractive optics and nanostructures tailored for synchrotron and EUV lithography applications.
- Collect and analyze data based on technical knowledge of device requirements.
- Execute creative, effective approaches to meet scientific goals under general supervision.
- Document and communicate research data and project status as required.
- Acquire new nanofabrication knowledge and skill sets relevant to our applications.
- Play a major role in the nanofabrication laboratory operation, equipment troubleshooting, and facility maintenance.
- Adhere to safe laboratory practices and protocols.
- Implement relevant Laboratory, Division, and Program safety policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Uphold Laboratory values of stewardship and IDEA.
What is Required:
- Bachelor degree in materials science and engineering, chemistry, physics, engineering or related field or equivalent in years of work experience, and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in a scientific or R&D context or related fields with a focus on diffractive optics nanofabrication.
- Extensive knowledge and experience with electron beam lithography, atomic layer deposition, electroplating, plasma etching, direct self-assembly, and/or other nanofabrication science and technology.
- Knowledge of x-ray diffractive optics.
- Experience of x-ray diffractive optic fabrication.
- Experience in basic nanofabrication tool troubleshooting and active engagement with equipment service engineers.
- Demonstrated ability to work safely in cleanroom and chemistry-lab environments.
- Ability to conduct routine work with general instructions and work in new projects with detailed instructions.
- Ability to work effectively within a small group of various levels of internal and external users and staff.
- Ability to develop and implement solutions to a variety of technical problems under general guidance.
- Ability to learn new skills and techniques as required by the situation.
- Ability to effectively document, present, and summarize results of research and development activities.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, provide quality work within tight time constraints, and deliver projects on schedule.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of x-ray microscopy
Notes:
- This is a full time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
- This position is expected to pay $80,784-$101,016, which fits within the full salary range of $80,784-$136,368 for the N50.1. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
