This position will provide customer-focused industrial hygiene consultation, supporting customers across Berkeley Lab in identifying and managing chemical, physical, and biological hazards. The Industrial Hygienist ensures the Laboratory’s mission aligns with ES&H related DOE orders and regulatory requirements and also acts as Subject Matter Expert for the Health and Safety Department programs and may serve as a Health and Safety Representative.
What You Will Do:
Industrial Hygienist Level 2:
Technical Program Support (75%)
Respiratory Protection Program (RPP):
- Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for respiratory protection at LBNL, overseeing all related matters and responding to customer inquiries.
- Develop and maintain the ES&H Manual chapter on respiratory protection, including interpretation and updates.
- Conduct hazard evaluations to determine exposure risks and necessary protection levels.
- Provide technical direction for program implementation and assists with training requirements.
- Review and update training courses and help Divisions develop internal policies and procedures.
- Schedule and perform respirator fit-tests and training, ensuring accuracy in records.
- Collaborate with Health Services to identify employees for the Respiratory Protection program and medical surveillance.
- Validate and update the personnel list and ensure compliance with regulations and policies.
- Oversee technical assurance for the Respiratory Protection Program, including the development and administration of the Program Self-Assessment (PSA) plan, surveys, and audits.
Industrial Hygiene Lab and Equipment Calibration Program:
- Manages the Industrial Hygiene (IH) Equipment Maintenance Program, including inventory management, equipment check-in/check-out, and organization of the IH lab for efficient use by Health & Safety staff.
- Ensures equipment is calibrated, maintained, and in good working order, including timely shipping for manufacturer calibration. Maintains records and procedures in systems like CHESS and PowerDMS.
- Purchases sampling supplies and assists with equipment selections.
- Develops training materials and usage guides, ensuring personnel are trained to use equipment effectively for exposure monitoring.
Exposure Assessment Program:
- Support the Exposure Assessment Program Manager by implementing program elements and conducting baseline, qualitative, and quantitative assessments.
- Handle inquiries about assessments, sampling instruments, media, and data management.
- Lead or conduct exposure assessments for special projects.
- Advise Health & Safety staff on sampling strategies in collaboration with the Program Manager.
- Assist in managing contracted analytical laboratory services.
Health and Safety (H&S) Representative Services (20%)
- Acts as the Health and Safety Representative for assigned areas, resolving technical issues in industrial hygiene and occupational safety. For unfamiliar issues, conducts research and seeks expert contacts.
- Understands division activities, personnel, and hazards to assist with hazard identification, evaluation, and control development.
- Participates in multidisciplinary teams for the ISM Program, including Work Planning and Control, safety inspections, self-assessments, accident investigations, and special projects.
- Develops and implements exposure assessment plans, entering data into CHESS.
- Conducts evaluations in laboratories and technical areas to support various health and safety programs.
- Provides consultation and technical guidance to Division Safety Coordinators, safety committees, scientists, researchers, and other personnel.
H&S/EHS Division Support (5%)
- Ensures day-to-day operations in assigned areas adhere to safety protocols and ES&H Manual standards.
- Prepares accurate reports and enters data into the H&S CHESS database.
- Supports emergency response to maintain Lab safety, continuity of operations, and property protection.
- Aids in completing DOE-required performance indicators and implements continuous improvement measures.
In addition to the above, Industrial Hygienist Level 3:
- May act as Division Liaison, coordinating Work Planning and Control reviews for scientific divisions.
- Serves as a (SME) on complex technical issues.
- Provides advanced, customer-focused health and safety consultation.
- Leads small to medium projects and performs advanced industrial hygiene measurements and hazard evaluations.
In addition to the above, Industrial Hygienist Level 4:
- Serve as (SME) on complex technical issues across all programs.
- Provide expert-level, customer-focused health and safety consultation.
- Lead and manage medium to large, complex projects.
- Conduct investigations using innovative approaches and provide leadership to less experienced professionals.
- Perform advanced industrial hygiene measurements and hazard evaluations.
What is Required:
Industrial Hygienist Level 2:
- B.S./B.A. in Industrial Hygiene or closely related field and 3 to 5 years of diverse, relevant experience in the industrial hygiene field, or M.S. and 1 to 3 years of experience, or Ph.D. and up to 1 year of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability and experience in participating on interdisciplinary ES&H teams tasked with developing and presenting briefings and technical reports.
- Develop, implement, and monitor industrial hygiene programs, including training, procedures, inspections, and exposure assessments.
- Understand and apply Cal/OSHA, Federal OSHA, DOE, ANSI, and other relevant regulations.
- Proficient in standard business software and cloud tools; possess excellent communication skills for interacting with stakeholders and subcontractors.
In addition to the above, Industrial Hygienist Level 3:
- B.S./B.A. and 5 to 7 years of relevant work experience, M.S. and 3 to 5 years of experience, or Ph.D. and 1 to 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work under very general direction and exercise sound independent judgment on issues of importance to the success of the Lab.
- Broad to expert knowledge and professional background in Industrial Hygiene and ability to provide creative solutions to complex to very complex problems.
- Significant experience working effectively with people in the widest variety of job classifications.
In addition to the above, Industrial Hygienist Level 4:
- B.S./B.A. and 7 to 10 years of relevant work experience, M.S. and 5 to 7 years of experience, or Ph.D. and 3 to 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work under consultative direction and exercise sound independent judgment on issues of importance to the success of the Lab.
Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Industrial Hygiene or equivalent discipline or professional certification.
- Experience providing ES&H support in a research lab environment.
- Experience working in a DOE environment.
- In-depth understanding of wet laboratory safety principles (incompatible chemicals, reaction planning, etc.).
Notes:
- This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
- The Industrial Hygienist Level 2 is expected to pay $115,000.00 - $130,000.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $96,096.00 - $162,144.00 annually for the job classification of H60.2.
- The Industrial Hygienist Level 3 is expected to pay $130,000.00 - $155,000.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $114,252.00 - $192,804.00 annually for the job classification of H60.3.
- The Industrial Hygienist Level 4 is expected to pay $160,000.00 - $180,000.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $134,496.00 - $226,944.00 annually for the job classification of H60.4.
- Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
- It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience.

- This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
