The role involves leading efforts to improve the performance of the LINAC, booster ring, and storage ring, participating in machine physics shifts, and driving Accelerator Instrumentation projects using advanced feedback techniques and cutting-edge systems. The engineer will also support other electrical engineering and control initiatives at ALS as needed.
What You Will Do:
Controls and Instrumentation Engineer Level 3:
Technical Lead:
Lead and manage ALS instrumentation projects, focusing on system upgrades and advanced concepts for accelerator instrumentation, lattice, and orbit management. Integrate new tools and software using advanced programming techniques.
Engineering Support:
Contribute to accelerator and electrical engineering projects at ALS, applying control theory, software, and instrumentation expertise.
Cross-Division Support:
Assist electrical engineering and instrumentation projects across LBNL programs, DOE initiatives, and international collaborations.
In Addition to the Above, Controls and Instrumentation Engineer Level 4:
Managing Supervisor:
Lead the Accelerator Instrumentation engineering group, overseeing staffing, skill development, and core competencies. Manage labs, staff training, and assignments to ensure readiness. Maintain high operational reliability of ALS Instrumentation while driving continuous improvement.
What is Required:
Controls and Instrumentation Engineer Level 3:
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Software Development, Computer Systems, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience; 5+ years preferred, particularly in beam diagnostics and instrumentation.
- Strong understanding of advanced feedback/control theory and design principles.
- Extensive experience developing applications for particle accelerators, especially storage ring lattice and orbit control systems.
- Expertise in instrumentation and accelerator beam diagnostics.
- Proven ability to solve complex problems through data analysis.
- Skilled in independent judgment for method and process selection.
- Advanced proficiency in programming languages/platforms like Python and Matlab.
- Knowledge of storage ring beam dynamics and accelerator physics.
- Expertise in accelerator control systems, especially EPICS.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with teams, scientists, and external partners.
In Addition to the Above, Controls and Instrumentation Engineer Level 4:
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Software Development, Computer Systems, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience; 10+ years preferred, particularly in beam diagnostics and instrumentation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with synchrotron light science at ALS or similar facilities is highly desirable.
- Experience in RF technology, magnetics, distributed controls, and strong mathematical/algorithm design skills.
Salary:
Controls and Instrumentation Engineer Level 3:
The expected salary for this position is $132,000.00 - $162,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $117,660.00 - $198,516.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
Controls and Instrumentation Engineer Level 4:
The expected salary for this position is $158,000.00 - $193,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $140,676.00 - $237,408.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

- This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
